The Joy of Endorphins

Greetings, medicine lovers!
Here I bring another very cheerful topic, endorphins. That beautiful substance that helps us so much to overcome our everyday sorrows. But I'm guessing some of you will be asking what's that about endorphins. Well, to give just a few data of its benefits I leave this small article, and then you can see for yourselves if it is good or what! 

The benefits of endorphins. 

Thanks to activities such as sports, gratifying things or just having a laugh, our organism produces these chemical substances which stimulate the nervous sistem and create a physical and emotional answer which leads to well being. 

The centers which produce these hormones are the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, both situated in the brain, and they activate the entire organism. 

The amount of endorphins circulating the body is not always the same. Some people are capable of releasing a larger volume, but we can all use them to improve the quality of our lives. 

These "hormones of happiness", which act on the receptors on the external membrane of some neurones, are linked to the mechanisms that control pain and self healing. Without them, even if we're healthy, we would feel discomfort in may parts of our body. 

Several studies have concluded that endorphins strenghten the immune sistem, stop ageing factors and stress, reduce pain and deflect injuries to the blood vessels. 

How to release endorphins? 

Endorphins are activated with any kind of activity that stimulates our senses: 

- Music: the Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of a study which refects that music increases endorphins in sick people, reducing the need for medicines. 

Besides... it's an ideal way to be distracted from pain and relief anxiety, for it acts directly on the central nervous sistem and increases endorphin levels. It also increases the amount of other endogenic substances such as dopamine, acetylcholine and oxytocin. 

The healing chemical substances generated by the cheerfulness and emotional wealth of music prepare the body to produce its own natural anesthetics and improve the immunological activity. 

- Fall in love: neurones unleash a series of substances responsibles of love, caresses and sexual relations. Among them we have endorphins, which produce that "tickling" sensation so common when we fall in love. 

- Isolation tanks: they can achieve a state of deep relaxation; the right hemisphere predominates (intuition and creativity) over the left hemisphere (more analitic and logic) releasing endorphins. 

- Sports is the king manufacturer of endorphins. And that's because physical activity is the best tool to release them and feel better. (NoT: And like our great modern thinker Elle Woods would say: "Sport releases endorphins. Endorphins make people happy. Happy people just don't shoot they're husbands.") 

Any sport, as long as it is practiced in a constant and moderate way at least four times a week for at least 45 minutes, has the ability to aleviate mood and make us feel better and more relaxed. 

This is due to the fact that after submiting our body to practice an intense activity the right part of the brain (responsible of emotions) predominates over the left part (reason or logic) and this makes us feel better. 

Exercise increases self esteem and self trust. Different studies have shown that low levels of endorphins correspond to states of pessimism or depression, while higher levels are associated to optimism. 

Besides, practicing sports regularly helps to the production of other substances, such as adrenaline, serotonine and dopamine, also responsibles for the feeling of euphoria.
